On June 19, we at New Día Cannabis Co. are proud to commemorate Juneteenth, a pivotal day in American history honoring the end of slavery and celebrating Black freedom, resilience, and culture. Join us in marking this remarkable occasion with connection, education, and community.
A Brief History of Juneteenth
Juneteenth traces its roots to June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of slavery—more than two years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.
What followed was a wave of jubilant celebrations across Black communities: expressing liberation, unity, and reflection. Over time, Juneteenth evolved from a regional observance to a national holiday, officially recognized in the U.S. in 2021—an overdue acknowledgment of Black Americans’ contributions to our nation.
Why Juneteenth Matters at New Día
At New Día, we believe in more than cannabis retail. We’re building a space rooted in pride, legacy, and culture. Our mission highlights community upliftment and inclusivity—not just in the neighborhood of Fenway, but throughout the cannabis industry and beyond. As one of Boston’s few Black-owned dispensaries, we take Juneteenth to heart, honoring the legacy of those who fought for freedom and equity.
Integration of art and culture is core to our identity—through initiatives like the Black Walls Gallery, Boston’s first 21+ fine art space housed right in our building. We’re redefining what a cannabis dispensary can be: a community hub, a cultural platform, and an ongoing celebration of diversity.
